Yes, there are such dentists. Don't know personally about the experience, but my daughter made it through, which is more than she'd done with other dentists. And, I'd be glad to recommend it, provided you have very good insurance or a very large bank account. One extraction, $600.00.

There are lots of dentist that use conscious sedation on patients.......I would never explain it like this to a patient, but the conscious sedation(i.v or pill) has an amnesia effect, so I think of it like the date rape drug.......you will respond to commands(open you mouth, close your mouth, etc) but you will not remember being at the dentist, and will not be in any pain or discomfort while you are there. It is usually best for the extremely anxious patients, and works well.

There are, but remember the chance always exists that you might not wake up.
A lot of time they use a stong sedative so you think you were asleep because you can't have your mouth open when you are actually asleep, or at least they might need your mouth to cooperate.

i know some vets that can put you to sleep.
You should look into:
- relative anaesthesia ( nitrous oxide) you're still awake but more relaxed.
- Laser Dentistry: its supposed to be painless. but expensive.
- look up painless dentistry clinics who use techniques to avoid pain.
-There are clinics that cater for scared patients.
I wouldn't recommend general anaesthetic for routine dental treatment as it is extremely costly (you have to pay the anesthetist as well and sometimes the hiring of anesthetic theatres. It causes alot of side effects one of them being death. you won't remember anything of course.

No respectable doctor would do this unless it is necessary. Frankly, anaesthesia is a risky business. They'll only do it if local anaesthetic isn't enough and they absolutely need you to be still for awhile.
