In your personal experience, do you think wheat and other starching foods like rice and potatoes put on the weight? Only POSITIVE ANSWERS, otherwise move on!

All of these are natural fibers and all natural things make you gain weight what we should be concerned about is excessive weight not weight in general if all things made you loose weight you wont he healthy ever try to think rationally. :-) I am not sure if you are getting my point but I tried to explain it the best I could .

They can be if eaten in excess. You should have no more than 4 slices of bread a day and this should be wholemeal. 2oz of rice or pasta when cooked as a serving, or 6oz of potatos' boiled chipped mashed or baked. Of rice and potatoes they have more nutritional food value if eaten with their skins. I,e brown rice baked or boiled potato as opposed to deep fried chips covered in fat or mashed with full fat butter and cream.

Sometimes the problem lies with what we serve with these foods an excess of fat laden sauces as a result of using cheese, cream, full fat yogurt and fatty meats. If you like sausage or burgers these two products alone are almost entirely 60% or more in fat with only 23% or less in meat the remainder being cereals as a filler.

Sometimes if you live in the fast lane and tell yourself that you haven't time for cooking and you then buy loads of convenience foods some with labels on saying low in fat, they could still be bad for you as they may be laden with other carbohydrates and sugars. Just as fatty as the full fat versions. But because carbohydrates do break down to sugars they could be burnt up as energy calories. Sadly most of us aren't that good to ourselves and prefer to relax rather than exercise the calories away. Hence, we are fast becoming unhealthy and obese.

We also do not consume as a nation enough fruit, salad or other vegetables, you know the five a day. Sadly we have become essential to the Mcdonalds and burger king commercial enterprises, and as a result our children will not even attempt to eat normal food.

Bad food habits and good food habits start when we are young.

The next Generations major killer will not be cancer. But medical problems dealing with the stomach, and intestines. There is only so much junk you can give these important organs the time to care is now.

It depends. Cutting out ingredients as common as wheat and sugar automatically reduces your calorie intake by a lot and some people may follow such a diet because it's very easy to identify what you should not eat. I think it's more than that though. When I cut out white foods (sugar, rice, potato, flour) I do lose weight and I believe it's partly because carbs slow down your metabolism and do not satisfy hunger while protein and fat is very filling in a small quantity and actually makes your body burn off extra calories just to digest it.

The energy your body needs to keep it alive and for all activity is supplied in our diet by carbohydrates and fats (and excess proteins if we eat too many).
Carbohydrates are starches (potato, rice, cereals, etc.) and sugars.
Fats in our diet are things like butter, cooking oil, etc.
If you eat more energy-food than you need the extra is not wasted but stored as adipose tissue (fat) beneath the skin.

Yes, high GI foods will put on weight.

However, wheat is not the main contributor; people have been eating it for thousands of years without obesity becoming a major issue.

The main problem is saturated fat, white sugar, and processed foods, including junk food, combined with a lack of "everyday" exercise. We go to the gym, but we don't walk to the store.

I think that what puts weight on people is their over eating..not in the sense of too much food, just too many calories

What you put in should equal or be less than what is expended energy wise.
Usually, it is a case of, people eating more calories than they can burn which equals storage of the un-expended energy in the form of fat= weight put on.
Starchy, wheat rice...carbohydrates= foods that need to be expended, are usually low GI, so slow burning and so you need alot less of these foods to give you a slow ,over the whole day ,energy source. If you do not use all the energy up..and you eat more carbs like these, you will store it as fat...

I hear potatoes are major baddies for gaining weight. Refined sugars are not only a large cause of weight gain, but diabetes. People were a lot fitter before refined sugar came along

Whole wheat is supposed to be good for you. It better be, I'm throwing down enough of it.
Rice and potatoes especially the white variety should be eaten in moderation.

Eating too much and not doing enough exercise is the cause of weight gain, it doesn't matter what type of food it is. Always use wholegrain rice, pasta etc and eat with veg.

No.wheat is less dangerous than rice.Potatos put on weight.Meat,egg and fatty food like ice cream and sugar increase weight.Indiscriminate eating of chocolates and by and large lack of exercise add to increase weight.
