Yes.
Or you could simply say: "A lot of people are waiting for you."
This conveys the same message in fewer words.

No. It should be There are many people waiting for you. Or, There are some people waiting for you. A lot is not good to use because that really means a piece of land, like a parking lot.

"There ARE a lot" is correct here.
To those who say it should be "is" because "a lot" is singular, they've misunderstood the English expression "a lot of" and its sister "lots of".
These do NOT function as the main noun, but are the equivalent of "some", "many", "much" -- words (or expressions) sometimes called "quantifiers".
Thus, "a lot of" in this use is NOT the equivalent of "a group of". WIth "a group of" there is a specific "group" in view"; there is no "lot" in view in "a lot of". (The fact that "lots of" and "a lot of" are interchangeable underlines this.)
In fact, "a lots of/lots of" are informal substitutes for "much" or "many" (depending on the context).
So the members of the following sets are equivalent:
There are many people outside.
There are a lot of people outside.
There are lots of people outside.
Are there many people here?
Are there a lot of people here?
Are there lots of people here?
If the noun cannot be counted, "a lot of" is used with the singular in the same way "much" would be used:
"Is there much furniture to carrry?"
"There is a lot of furniture to carry."

for native english speakers, it sounds perfectly fine because we would say that. however, "a lot" is singular, therefore "there is a lot of people waiting for you" would be correct. but you don't have to change it because no one says that. sometimes, especially americans, we make a lot of mistakes in our own language...but they go unnoticed because we're so used to them and they just sound right. so don't worry about that sentence being grammatically right or wrong...frankly, no one's going to notice.

Depends on who's waiting. Alot of people or a "lot" of people?

It should be "There is a lot of people waiting for you". It's a common mistake ie "the committee are..." when it should be "The committee is..."
Don't worry tho', No-one will pull you up about it. Unless you ask of course...
