Definitely start with what your kid likes- music, horses, skate-boarding, flowers, art, math, football... whatever their thing is. Then go from there.

An idea- start out with taking your teen to the linnen store to pick out the bedding. Bedding can be a good place to start- give you an idea of where to go.

When I was a kid, I would have jumped through all sorts of hoops for a mural on my interests... See if you can find a custom painter to come in and paint something on the wall.

On the subject of storage- there's a couple different stores that have storage ideas- WalMart and K-Mart have these bare-pine adjustable shelves- the tall sets come with 4 uprights and 4 shelves. Each shelf is attached to all 4 uprights with 2 screws/upright.... (I used one as an entertainment center for a while!)

Incorporating these shelf units into the decore is a cinch- they can be painted to match the theme... and if your kid is a art-lover/artist, let him/her paint it... take over the driveway for an afternoon?

You could also cover the unit with cloth- sticky-backed velcro around the top of the unit, and add a curtain... use a stapler and do something drapey... stapler and batting- make 1 shelf padded?
