wouldn't it save you so much energy if it were only once or twice a year?

thank you all for your answers. i was looking for something more in terms of evolution, if it's clear that now women don't need (or want) to get pregnant as often (no many losses of human life due to predation anymore) why is it that nature keeps making women go through menstruation which drains so much energy from you and produces all those hormonal changes? clearly it is not efficient at all.

becuase our bodies like to make us suffer... bleeding all the damn time... ITS NOT FUN... it makes us crankie... and it makes us hungry and tired..... a woman can get prengant no matter how many periods she has... the period isnt showing her fertility.. its just takeing away the walls your body built you every month incase you do get preggers

I have seen it suggested elsewhere that once upon a time women didn't have so many periods because they were either pregnant or nursing. When mothers breastfeed their babies exclusively (round the clock and with no significant separation time which is not common in American culture), many mothers don't have a return of fertility for a year or more after giving birth. Also, family sizes were much larger in the past, so women _DID_ spend a lot more time being pregnant at the least. When humans were first developing, it probably wasn't a bad thing to keep having new babies because probably many of them were lost to illness or predation.

That's the way nature works. Nature makes it so she has her cycle 12 times a year to increase her fertility. Since a woman can only get pregnant during a 24 hour period when she has her cycle, there's actually only 12 days a year, roughly, when she can get pregnant. It would be pretty hard to get pregnant if a woman could only get pregnant one day out of the year, wouldn't it?
If you missed it, you'd have to wait a whole year before trying again.
This is really kind of stupid question. It's like asking "why do men shoot off 100 million sperm every time when only one is needed to fertilize an egg?"

Well, some women end up getting pregnant 15 or 20 times, but that's another issue.
It's the species-survival mechanism, produce as many ovicells as possible, one a month. When it doesn't result in conception, it gets thrown away - and that's the menstrual period. We can't stop and start the genetic drive of the body to prepare for pregnancy at will.

The menstrual cycle is all a major part of being a woman. The getting pregnant does require the females eggs to become fertilized by male sperm.
However depending on situation the female may not wish to become pregnant until at a certain age or time of year.

Because you are able to become pregnant once a month and each month if that egg is not fertilized then it has to be washed out (you period) so another cycle can start and you can possibly become pregnant that next month. Hence the reason you also dont have periods while you are pregnant because your body knows its already started working on a baby.

I am the mother of four and I have always said who came up with the idea that women should bleed every month and give birth to their children? The man is supposed to be the strong one. Giving birth is so painful I believe that should have been a man thing. Well just a thought.

To provide the opportunity to get pregnant. If they only had say 5 cycles, they would have to drag a guy around in cuffs ready to do the deed at any given time.More cycles means freedom for men LOL.

Menstral cycles are meant to flush the unfertilized egg out of your uterus. The blood is the lining of your uterus. If you didn't have a menstral cycle then the lining would build up until it couldn't build up anymore and you'd likely get alot of infections and when it finally came out it would probably smell disgusting.

Because the human body functions in order to survive and to reproduce. In order to do that it has to be fertile at all times in case there is an opportunity to procreate.
