Go to a beauty school.
It's cheaper than a salon, but the students are closely supervised and will do a much better job that you can with at home products.

Never, ever try to lighten your hair yourself. Reds can be very dangerous as well. I go from a natural light brown to a bright copper red, but I always get it done professionally. Don't play games with your hair... either be serious about it and spend the money, or don't do it. Your hair is one of the most important parts of your overall appearance... you don't want to mess it up. You can't do all-over color and highlights at the same time usually... wait a week and then do the highlights.

The at home, cheap way, is just what your hair will look like if you do it yourself. Wait and save if you have to, check out deals being offered, like back to school specials or a new salons opening with specials on color. The look you're going for is not easily accomplished at home. Take the time and do it right. See a hairdresser!

It's usually best to go to a salon for blonde even though it'll cost a bit more, because most of those home dyes turn your hair orange-ish/yellow

i suggest not to do it yourself. it is a double process applying it yourself will bleed and be horrendous looking. go and spend the money at the salon. you will end up doing anyways and it will cost you more for fixing and repairing. I would suggest to put an all over color (blond) that you are looking for and then go to the salon to apply the red with a cap and or foiling.. if it bleeds they have the right products to fix bleeding. also if red dies out they will be responsible for redyeing...thoughts for you

did you heard about henna ( Mehendi). its a plant, you need to get the leaves of that plant and make it to paste. apply this paste to you hairs. after one hour you hair colour will change as you required.
This henna paste is basically used to make tattos in hands and body, this gives a light blood red color after few mins. try out this its really cheep and easy to make in home.
