Uh... technically... there already is. We just haven't had to use it. Have you heard of the Selective Service?? All men ages 18 and up are supposed to be registered. It's the modern day equivalent to the draft. But we've had no cause to have to use it yet.

PS: To Michael up above, I don't know where you're getting your information, but the military is definately NOT down sizing! All of the branches are reporting higher than anticipated new recruits and are upping their annual goals for the next several years...

The US Military is downsizing. Recruiting less people, allowing more to get out early, actually kicking some out early against their will, and letting the numbers drop through attrition (Retirement and end of enlistments) instead of retaining people or offering more bonuses for people to stay. There are more than enough people that are willing to serve in the Military that a draft is not needed. Right now the standards are very high. In the AF, if you have too many tatoos, you will be denied entry. Before a draft is reinstated, silly statndards such as the tatoo rules will drop, and people who are willing to serve regardless of how much they write on themselves will be able to serve.

We are a long way from having a draft in the US Military. Many things have to go wrong all over the world before that particular road is taken.

Not in the immediate future. The last draft was due to the 2nd WW and the Cold War which followed, but given that the US is now the only Superpower, there is no significant external threat to Americans which would warrant a draft.

Give China another 20 yrs, though.

The military is actually exceeding their goals, yes this is true. They may be upping their goals to accomodate this...yes, but there's not a draft going on. They are actually TRYING to downsize by getting rid of people early, being more strict about violations to code while you're enlisted, and being stricter about who they let in the military in the first place. I am currently in the Delayed Entry Program and due to go to basic training for the United States Air Force on December 4th. My husband, however, is currently serving in the United States Air Force active duty (for 2 years now).

No because if things got bad enough that the USA needed a massive influx of new soldiers (say some kind of invasion scenario) then there would be no shortage of volunteers.

The army itself only wants professional volunteers. Draftees are not very reliable. That's why American soldiers are so much better than their drafted foes in the Third World. Volunteers are motivated, dedicated and braver.

Besides, enforced servitude is against the constitution. Even a Republican stacked modern Supreme Court would throw it out.

Just because you pay draftees does not mean they aren't slaves.

Not too long ago, when I was 16 , there was a draft. When you reached a certain age you had to register and depending on your circumstance you were given a classification.
If our government deem that we are in a predicament of need...and cannot depend on volunteering, the draft can definitely return

doubledc84 that is not true. In fact it's the law that every boy has to sign up for selective service. The government just said that they would not ever use the draft again. Maybe though.

It doesn't matter anyway. If terrorists attacked our schools, churches, nurseries, and hospitals, all the liberal tree hugging hippie ******* would flea to France and there wouldn't be anyone left to draft. It'd be up to us conservatives to stand our ground. I'd hate to be a recruiter in San Francisco.

It is quite possible, at least for a short time!

They military cannot keep not letting men out of the service (which is a defacto draft) when their time is up!!

Probably would be if there was a major crisis and are low on our current troops, then they will need to start drafting.
