Obviously there are people for it and against it, but what are the benefits/costs of each side?

The everyday people in this country do not understand the proper way that the court system works. They do not understand that everything takes place in a certain order and the proper rules of evidence must be followed, such as not asking leading questions except in situations such as recalling recolection. Another example of a rule of evidence is heresay evidence and the exceptions to the rules. Also a person must look at how a jury views someone who defends themself. A person defending themself also does not know the proper way to adress the court, or the proper place to stand, it may not seem like a big deal but it really is. Another main problem with defending yourself is that the average person does not understand the true definition of most crimes, becuase the media uses words like burglary too loosly. If someone is charged with a crime such as burglary all the elements of this crime must be proven. The elements are as followed: breaking and entering the dwelling of another during the night with the intention to commit a felony therein. If the crime was commited during the daytime the accused can not be found guilty of burglary......and lots of other things but im to lazy to keep typing.

When you present yourself as the witness, it is very hard and awkward for you to ask a question and to answer it during the direct examination. Another issue is that, the cost of hiring a lawyer is expensive, so a lawyer do not to hire the service of another.

Not only did he go to law school, do a fellowship in law, practice law for a whole bunch of years, continue his legal education throughout those years, win numerous debates, but he's also a brilliant strategist.

The main reason is they don't know anything about the law and are just going to wind up screwing themselves!!
