to actually be able to do something seriously great for thousands of people?

Yeah if your a president, prime minster, king or someone of that nature. Being a good and just ruler is the best thing you could do for thousands of people.

maybe u could start a massive protest and get rid of george bush other than that no probs not. but i heard a story bout a guy hu was on the beach in the mornin for a run and he saw a lil kid pickin up all the starfish that had washed up that morning and throwing them back into the water and the guy asked the kid why he was botherin coz there was millions of them along the beach for miles and they were all gonna die when it got hotter and the kid had no chance of savin them all. the kid told the guy, 'nah i wont save them all, no i cant make much of a real difference.' he looked down at the starfish in his hand and threw it into the ocean, "but it makes a difference to that one..."
so u probs wont be able to help the whole world but u may be able to save someones son or daughter and instead of making a difference for the world u'll make a world of difference to some mother or father. sounds ok to me

Very possible!
You can donate your money or clothes for some disaster victims (there are thousands of them)
Provide food for the poor people sp they wont starve anymore...
Be kind to all people you meet...etc...etc...it's so possible if you want to make it happen!

Being the leader of a country and managing to have them survive for a reasonably large number of extra days. I think this has happened before.

Yes. Smile at as many people as you can every day. Nothing makes a person happier than to have another smile at them. over time you would meet your goal. :-)
