It doesn't spoil the hot food, but it can mess up the temp in your fridge and heat up other things like eggs etc. Food should be cooled for a little while on the counter before going in the fridge.

yes, i believe the food have to cool down first- then put into refrigerator-
i watched Rachael Ray and if she is doing it- we all should !

The faster the better. For instance if you had a giant pot of soup it would be wisest to put it in a large pan to increase teh surface area to rapidly cool.
