I've had a female akita for 9 years now and she is 80 pounds. Males can get alot bigger though. A friend of mine use to breed them and her male was about110 pounds!! They average about the size of a german sheppard. But I have to tell you, most akitas are not good with other breeds of dogs. Akitas were bred from wolves and were cold weather hunting dogs. I know that all dogs are how you raise them, but Sheeba,my dog, is the nicest in the world with people, but does not get along with other dogs. Shes been like that since she was a pup and we NEVER taught her to be that way. Unfortunately thats just how they are. But shes smart as a whip. LOVES the winter time!! She'll sleep right in the snow. They don't like hot weather, and she sheds big time!! Twice a year she loses her coat and its EVERYWHERE!! Just make sure you brush him/her daily. It'll reduce some of the shedding. Overall, their great dogs!!!

There are two sizes of Akita. One is a medium breed that reaches about 16-17 inches tall and about 40 - 60 pounds. The other is the large Akita and measures 27 at the shoulder and weighs in at 110 to 140. Mine was extra large and weighed in at 140, and was 27" at the shoulder.
The thing to remember about Akita's is that they are very jealous and territorial animals. They don't like to share their owner or the house.
It is hard to tell if you have a medium or a large Akita until they are growing. You will need to use a trusted kennel.
Contrary to popular thought, Akita's are Japanese dogs bred from two types of Chow. They have no relation to wolves other than the canine relation that all dogs have. They were originally bred to watch the kids while the parents were in the fields. They were excellent at keeping away predators and at keeping the kids corralled at the home.
The first Akita was brought to this country by Helen Keller. She was given a puppy by the Japanese government.

Akitas are powerful and aggressive dogs. If I were you, I think about getting a labrador or husky.

a little bit bigger than the lab mix. My daughter's dog is Akita and lab mix, and he is thicker through the chest and about 2 inches taller at the shoulder than her neighbour's lab. He is a much nicer dog, too.
