they both had Down's Syndrome. The people in the restaurant were perturbed, and were snickering. This couple came in and enjoyed a nice meal together, laughed and talked. They left hand in hand. What do you think of this? If you are against or for this please state why?
I thought it was adorable, but thought they should have been chaparoned.

PS. The reason I thought they should have been chaparoned was that people are so viscous.

i totally agree with you...people who snicker by this has problems...i mean what if you had downs syndrome, wouldn't you want to be in love also??...they already have a hard life dealing with it, i don't think they also need to deal with other people who are ignorant...

The fact that they have Down's syndrome is fine - I think it's sweet that they're together. The only thing I worry about is the same thing I worry about whenever I see teenagers together: that they take things slowly and not end up doing things that will bind them together permanently until they're ready for a permanent relationship.
If these folks understand about their partner having to be the most important, even more important than Mom and Dad, and about the need to have that person and only them as long as both of them are still alive, before they become one physically and not only, then hey, why not?

That is really cute to hear of two young people with a problem like that going out on their first date. But yes people are so mean. What is this world coming too. They should have been chaperoned. But maybe before they left on their date they faced that issue. Then figured well so what if people are mean. I love her and she loves me and they were OK with that. If they had that mindset. I believe no matter what anyone said. They probably had a great time.

I feel this is an amazing story and you will probably find they were being Chaperoned but discreetly from a distance . What a pity that people are so narrow minded to snigger , I wonder how they would have felt if that was their child , sibling or friend.
People with down syndrome are very sensitive and they must have been really brave to put up with the stares.
Well done to you for being so mature about it.

I think it's terrific. I know of married couples who have Down syndrome. As for the chaperone..well, if they are mature enough and have been raised to ignore rude people, then I don't see why they shouldn't enjoy a date together without a chaperone. Sounds to me like the other patrons were the ones who needed chaperoning!
My son has Down Syndrome and I will be thrilled when he is old enough to date and socialize....just like any other teen!

I think it would be very sweet to see. there is someone out there for everyone and for these 2 very special people to have found each other is awesome. I think that everyone ( down's syndrome or not) needs to be loved and to give love to another. The other people in that restaurant should be ashamed.

i think they are people too. they should not be locked up forever unable to go out in public in fear that "normal" people would laugh at them or treat them any different then they would treat someone without a disease. and as long as they were not disrupting anyone then why should they be chaparoned. i think it would have been cute and a nice situation. and it is sad that people were laughing at them!

You can not control what others think and some people judge the unknown. That couple was oblivious to what other people thought and enjoyed each other's company so that's all that mattered. Everyone has a right to live their lives as they choose.

For. Persons with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else. You might have misjudged their age. Persons with Down's Syndrome tend to look younger than they are. Obviously, they behaved just fine-so what is your beef with it? The worst barriers facing persons with disabilities now is not physical barriers, but attitudinal barriers, which are much harder to eliminate. Good for them for enjoying their lives.
