It's different for most people. Weight gain (this happened to my friend. She didn't just magically gain the weight, she began to feel really hungry all the time and subsequently started eating more. This eventually went away once her body got used to the pill.). You might have an adverse reaction to one kind of birth control pill but not with another. I took one and ended up getting sick and vomited a lot. I switched to a different pill and I was fine. (If you are trying a birth controll pill, try not to start right before a big event. The Saturday of the week I got sick I was moving into my college dorm in a different city. I had already switched from the pill that made me sick but was still recovering. That really sucked, lol.)

Breakthrough bleeding isn't really common unless you miss a pill for several days, or your body has gotten used to the dosage. I was on the lowest dosage of my pill for 4 years then began to have breakthough bleeding. My gyno just upped the dosage to the next level and it's been fine since.

Mood swings and bloating I don't really think are side effects, since they are caused by PMS which you still get if you are on the pill.

once I was prescribed the pills as a part of hormonal treatment (I actually didn't require contraceptives at that time) - and had a really bad breakthrough bleeding (no pain, though). Got scared and stopped. It is all individual.
You can get 100 opinions but how the pill affects you - you will know only after trying.

On the pill, I've had bouts of breakthrough bleeding until my doctor put me on Premarin for a month. Eventually, he had me switch what pill I was on, and the breakthrough bleeding quit. Other than that, I haven't had any real side effects.
