I'm 16 years old and pretty healthy. I've been experiencing really bad dandruff lately.

Today I came across a strange lump in the left side of the back of my head. It's not directly behind my ears. It feels like its under the skin.. Earlier today it hurt to touch it, but now it only hurts if I put a fair amount of pressure on it. I doctored a picture I found on google image to show where approximately the lump is.

That's not the back of my head, keep in mind.

Is it a swollen lymph node, or could it be something else?

I've been putting Scalpicin on it, will that help if it's one of those cysts?

It is most probably a sebaceous cyst. A sebaceous cyst is formed when opening of a sebaceous gland gets clogged and the secretions (sebum) starts to collect in it.

I can be treated surgically by excising it under local anaesthesia.

Consult a doctor for that. Don't worry its nothing very serious.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was cystic acne, probably caused by nothing more then dirty and blocked up pores. If this is the case, it will go away in a few days. Still, if you feel that it might be something more serious then that, then by all means get a medical professional's opinion. If it is cystic acne, your best bet in dealing with it is keeping your skin clean and oil-free.
