The only thing that turns his ears pretty pink is bag balm. The stuff my vet gave me doesn't work I took him back for a second time unsuccessfully. He also gets it on his sides.

The most probable reason is a food allergy. An allergy to chicken is a very common allergy in dog and yet most foods are chicken based. Try changing his food to a non chicken based one and give it four to six weeks to see if it makes any difference. Another reason is he may be lacking in fatty acids. Try flaxseed oil or arctic salmon oil. Good Luck

Aww, poor baby. I'm not sure, but I'd suggest taking him to another vet...I don't know if they have vets that specialize in dermatology but if there is I would check into that. Hope that helps and good luck!

Also, give him an extra pat on the head for me. I love German Shepards =D

He could have mange--get a vet to check for this--the cure is simple, the vet can give a shot of Ivermectin to get rid of the mange. Also, this could be from flies (especially if you live in a warm climate).

Your dog could have a form of eczema....dry flaky skin in patches. Nerves can cause that and also too strong of shampoo or frequent bathing. Our Jack Russell gets dry flaky ears from too harsh shampoo.

He might have allergies and there are specific vets that deal with animal allergies. You can also give your animals Benadryl--you would have to talk to your vet to determine how much.

Maybe it's dandruff. Try anti-dandruff baby (for the eyes) shampoo.
