Depends on what you consider a good dog. Terriers are great pets but a bit hyper and require a lot of attention. They can be the most fun but, it takes a lot of time and effort they can get bored easily so you have to keep them occupied or they will dig and bark and tear things up if you neglect them. Keep em busy and he won't disappoint. But if you don't have the time or can't commit try a different type of dog. And depends on what breed of terrier.

To start off, there are many types of terriers, from Jack Russell terriers to Yorkshire terriers. These dogs may look cute and small, but they require a sufficent amount of time and loving attention. In regards to the lady that is giving away terriers, you would want to check out the dogs to see if they are healthy and she is not giving away sick dogs. Although it would be humane and kind to take in one of these dogs, it seems to me as if you are new at dog ownership and should not start out with a puppy that requires special medical care on top of all of the requirements a puppy already has. I would highly suggest you consult a few breeders, the local humane shelter, and compare the quality of the dogs the lady has to the ones you see there. It is of critical importance you understand what this tpye of dog requires and that you are capable of providing care for it.
To quote flealess.org, "Irish Terriers are usually not recommended for the "first time dog owner," because they are a lot of work and really do best with experienced people. Obedience classes are DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED as soon as the puppy inoculations have been completed. It is not unusual for them to have to repeat the classes. (Do YOU have time for this???) They are strong willed, and are so intelligent that they get bored with repetition."
PLEASE think carefully about the commitment required to take care of a new puppy, and make SURE you can care for it, as the care of a creature of any kind is a BIG responsibilty that should not be undertaken lightly.

I would check into what kind of terriers they are. The group ranges from the massive Staffordshire Bull Terrier to the tiny Yorkshire terrier. In general, though, terriers tend to be a handful. They need lots of exercise and they may try to exert dominance over other dogs or people. Make sure you do your research before adopting one of these dogs!

There are a lot of different terriers. For example, a yorkshire terrier .... right through to pitbull terrier (which I don't think you want).
As a generalization, if it is a small cute terrier type - they are yappy and hyper, but usually loyal and loving too.

I'm sure you and your terrier will have fun together. To start with, he will have to learn that you are the "pack" leader and have authority. Then if he is about to cross a road or run off, he will obey your command of "sit" or "stop". Dog training classes will be enjoyable both for you and the dog, a happy dog knows his boundaries of behaviour. (All a bit like a husband, really!;)

well there are several types of terriers, ask the lady what kid of terriers they are. Generally terriers are very active and sometimes hyper dogs. But the size depends on what type of terrier they are.

Terriers are very sweet dogs, but they have alot of energy and require alot of attention. They were bred to hunt small rodents and so they may dig. They also have a tendancy to bury their food. If you have alot of time and are fairly active, this is a perfect fit.

terriers are high energy.. need lots of attention, a regular walk to keep him with something to do.
They dig too.. they also are hunters.. natural hunters of rats, squirrels and other small things. If you have a cat or a rabbit, Id be careful and introduce them slowly, with supervision.
We have 2 terrier mixes and they are so much fun.
They are awesome and kind with babies and kids and love to play and rough house.
