I've heard so many people refering to 'support groups' for enlisted military men and women's families. How do i get invovled in this? I still live in my home state, moving to Naval base in October. How can i find out whats going on around me and in my future city?

The following link that is on Adopt A Troop's website would be a good place to start. It gives you hyperlinks by state.

If you are a spouse of someone in the military, the unit they are in will (should) have a Family Readiness Group (FRG). The FRG is comprised of the families (spouses, parents, siblings... whatever ) of the deployed men and women of the services.

If you are just interested there are groups as stated by the previously posted answers.

Also, as you will be on a Naval installation, you could just ask around when you get there. Most FRG's are desparatly short of support and would like all the help they can get.

Your local Family affairs office and/or chaplain has info for military and civilian sponsored support groups. Each military branch and even some commands have groups that place families together to help each other during a deployment. Many of the groups like adopt a platoon, operation paperback and others are set up for civilians to gie assistance to troops with supplies like toothpaste, foot powder, and even books. I am currently deployed at H5 Tall Afar, Iraq. We get boxes through the MWR on a weekly basis, not enough for everyone, but any guy that I know is short cash due to family obligations and such, will get whatever I am given or can get my hands on. We are regularly given contact info for the reservists families and since many of our troops here are from US bases in Germany, they offer assistance through the European Command. So go see you chaplain or family affairs.

Help them communicate with their families. Dave is a pretty cool guy doing something really great with incredibly limited resources. Dave says that if you know troops in Iraq have their tech guy get in touch with him via the website in order to trade hardware and help set it up.
