I am not sure where you live, and different spiders live in different climates, so I listed 3 sites. One lists spiders all over the world, the other two are primarily the Americas. Don't kill it if it is not poisonous, it is a voracious eater of bad bugs - it will eat roaches, flies, mosquitoes, etc - a great "friend" who should be respected and who is often feared instead. best wishes!

I guess first make sure to contain the spider safely. I usually don't give spiders a chance, but sometimes I feel bad for some bugs.
Then google the name of your state and then spiders. You'll find usually a list of spiders that live in your state. Then just match the photograph.
I think the bigger ones are not that problematic... but I'm no expert.

Depends on where in the world you live. Half dollar size--do you mean including the legs, or just the thorax/abdomen? Black widows tend to have a very round abdomen, typically the size of a pea. Look for a red or an orange hour glass shape under the abdomen.

well alot of spiders are poisenes but they cant kill u because they are to small sometimes they might seem really big because they have long legs so if this spider was only big because of its legs u r fine but if it was just all around big u should call a profesional
P.S. if this spider had ANY color u should stay in a hotel while a PRO gets the job done

brown recluses and black widows are poisonous, but their bites are rarely fatal. if the spider has long legs and is hairy it could be a tarantula. unless you live in the extreme southwest this is unlikely. even there they are rarely fatal. the ones in some parts of mexico can be highly deadly.

poisonous spiders such as brown recluse and black widow have telltale markings that make it fairly easy to identify them. Try looking here or perform your own search...different areas have different species.

Let it bite you. If you don't die, it's not poisonous.
