Select LCD if you have a very well lit room. Since the screen is back lit, meaning that light is being pushed through the screen, you will see the picture better and have less problems with the glass on Plasmas. The best LCD tv out in the market is the Sony KDL-V40XBR1. It was the #1 selling LCD in the past 6 months. It has a great screen, with vibraint colors.

If you do most of your viewing at night or in a room with not tons of light then go with a Plasma. Plasmas have much better black levels, meaning that when your watching a night scene in a movie it will look black not grey like from an LCD. The best Plasma in the market is the Panasonic TH-42PX60U (or the TH-50PX60U if your looking for a 50"). Pansonic has the best Plasma screens in the market, the PX series has 3072 levels of grediation which produces over 28 billion colors.

If pricing is the main concern go with Plasma's they are cheaper.

Some people who are uneducated on Plasmas will tell you that they only last 4-5 years. Thats not true the models out today will last you 20-30 years depending on your viewing habbits.

The best place to find out more information about Plasmas and LCD are the following web sites:

I was stuck on this issue when I decided to go with LCD after some research. Consumer Reports said that Plasma has a lifespan, as they all do to some extent. But plasma begins to noticeably degrade in picture quality at about the 7 year point. I hated the fact that everytime I turned on the TV, that countdown to bad picture was ticking away. The LCD I went with is a SONY 1080p, which is I believe the state of the art. There is no moving parts and there is a bulb inside that is easily replaced, thereby making the TV like new again, should it ever wear out or burn out. Plus, the TV cost 1/3 less than a Plasma costs. I went to Circuit City and observed first hand the picture quality side by side and this SONY TV was at least equal, better in some situations, than the plasma. I ended up with a SONY 50" 1080p LCD projection TV. Had it for about 5 months now and still love it. No buyer's remorse here...........

This question has been asked many times, so I've formulated my standard answer. Here it is:

Picture quality of plasma is brighter, better color, better blacks than LCD. (There is something about looking directly at glowing phosphors!)

Sharpness is the same for equivalent pixel counts. Some newer LCDs have 1080 x 1920 resolution, most plasmas still in the 720 x 1250 range.

Plasma is heavier and uses more power.

There are reports that plasmas are not as reliable or they don't last as long, but that may not be true with the latest models. Plasma phosphors dim over time; but LCDs use flourescent lamps which also dim and eventually burn out.

Plasmas are subject to burn-in. A stationary image left on the screen for a long time could produce a permanent ghost image. The most risk is when viewing a lot of 4:3 ratio pictures (non-HD), which are displayed with vertical dark areas on the left and right to fill in the wide screen. There are ways to minimize this, however. many sets have a "stretch" mode which widens the picture to fill the whole screen.

Plasmas come in largers sizes, although large LCDs are coming out, but they are expensive.

LCD contrast and brightness can be reduced when viewing from off-center.

Plasma might be king amongst the most desirable products this year, but there is more than one flatscreen technology vying for your hard-earned cash. Lcd, the hang-on-the-wall kid on the block, is pushing plasma for the number-one spot. It may have started out as a small-screen alternative to plasma, with 15in and 17in TVs spinning off the PC market, but LCD's liquidcrystal display technology is nowgoing head-to-head with plasma's gasses.

Plasma still has the edge in terms of size, making the biggest statement, but lcd now boasts a 42", and there are many more bigscreen LCDs due for introduction over the next few years. The battle of the hang-on-the-wall giants is really hotting up now, and there's likely to be only one winner!

so it's up to u

You Really MUST go to a tv shop where you can SEE them working. (if only to note model number and buy mail order)
The picture quality between sets, even of the same make, different model..is enormous, regardless of lcd or plasma. I have seen a small projection tv (in sunlight, their worst fault) looking better than the plasma in the same viewing surroundings. The other 3 projection tvs looked crap! So forget editorial, go see a set and get the one that looks best, In a consumer test, using the best cheapest, and worst middle/expensive, experts hardly noticed a difference in quality, of over a thousand pounds! Plasma or Lcd? who's best at cooking scrambled eggs? you or me?...Its going to be OUR own oppinions, at the end of the day!
