It's easy.

1. Delete all your partitions.
2. now create new partions using Win98 setup.
3. Install 98 in C Drive.
4. After 98 completed. restart the system with WinXp install disk (should be bootable).
5. When selecting the drive select D drive and format as FAT. Don't format NTFS (will affect integrity with Win98).

or

4. Run the WinXP install within win98. select clean install (don't select Update).
and follow step 5 above.

That's all.

Now the boot menu for OS installed will display on system booting.

If you not clear yet, reply me.

First boot your pc with the help of a win98 bootable Cd. In dos prompt use fdisk command to delete all the partitions then again create new partitions namely C,D and E. Then format all the 3 drives. Then install win98 in C: drive after that install win XP in the D: drive of your computer. Please note that both the OS should not be installed in the same drive if you do so you can only use win98 not win XP. This type of system is called a Duelboot system. You can use any of the OS you want.

I had a hard drive that was a little larger than mine and it had some problems in it so I formatted the hard drive and tried to install windows xp on it it would not work,
but I'll tell you, I just done an upgrade install on my 98 and it worked better, I still got my old windows files, but it worked.

if you don't know what you are doing I would not format it, until you new just what to do.

take a bootable cd with cd rom support, it must have win 98 files in it, run disk manager(parition and farmatting tool for dos,if it doesent run on your pc run it with switch = -x ) if you dont have format all the drives manually then install win 98 from the setup file in the cd(it would be in a folder named win98) then if u want to install windows xp insert the cd it will autoplay, click on install windows xp now. then if you want to keep win 98 with win xp, on the first screen of setup their would be a drop box open it and click on "new installation(advanced)" and if you want only xp on computer click on "reinstallation(recomonded)" and then it will ask for product key that u may be having

This works for me. You can give it a try.

At the time you turn your computer on, press and hold F9 until you get this screen where you can choose to format your computer and it does it for you. It takes about two hours or more, after it finishes, just run the windows cd.

Make sure you save all your files before!!

You will need a boot manager such as is included with Linux if you wish to be able to use 98 and/or XP on the same computer.

The below web page gives some good head starts for reformatting your hard drive:

Also here's a good article from Microsoft on dual booting
