Many people say to drink while having (oxalate) kidney stones. But, should one drink WHILE attacked by a kidney stone? Some say no, because the (pressure and) pain would get even worse(!). Some say yes, to pass the stone. But if that increases the pain, that's NOT an option (as would anyone say who knows how much pain a kidney stone can give) at all.

I was diagnosed with multiple kidney stones(between 4-6) a few months ago and I have passed 2. So, I have between 2 and 4 left. The pain is awful but why prolong the pain? Drink the water and get the stone moving. Relief will come as soon as it passes. If you don't drink the stone stops gets stuck and then it only moves a little at a time and that causes more and more pain.

I had one a few years ago that lasted for 6 months and I thought I was dying. It was misdiagnosed as a Urinary Infection and it wasn't properly diagnosed until I was in the hospital on IV's for 4 days. The fluids finally flushed it out. The pain of actually passing it hurt like holy heck but was far better than dealing with the pain of having that stone moving around in there for months and months.(I couldn't have anything for pain because I was pregnant, so I just had to deal with it)
I would much rather drink as much water as possible and get the thing moving around and eventually have it to pass than to risk it getting stuck and not moving and being in pain even longer.
Good Luck! Hope yours passes soon.

And a note to Barbara... It is not drinking (alcohol) that put him in this situation to begin with. I do not drink at all and yet I have had several stones.

A patient with a kidney stone will say that the most important aspect of treatment is adequate pain relief. Because the pain of passing a kidney stone is so severe, narcotic pain medications (like morphine) are usually required. It is believed that stones may pass more quickly if the patient is encouraged to drink large amounts of water (2-3 quarts per day).

Are you asking whether you should drink alcohol when you have a kidney stone? No, you should not. That is what got u in that shape. Your urine has too much calcium in it and it formed stones in your kidneys. Now if you want to attack those stones, you had better have a lot to drink just to see them---

you want to drink small amounts of water to help flush it. The pressure is going to suck either way.
