I totally agree. And why can't people have rational discussions about religion instead of fighting and bashing? Everyone has a right to their own religion or lack their of. I know I don't want my children to have to fight to be able to believe what they want to believe. Respect others if you want to be respected.

That's a great question. I think the problem is that people don't always agree on what is going to make the world a better place. For example, a Christian may think that aggressive street evangelism will make the world better, while a non-Christian might think it was actually hurting the world in some way. As a former Christian and current agnostic I understand what it means to have two different people, both good people, having completely different opinions on what will make the world a better place.
That being said, some things should always be supported, I think. Kindness, empathy, respect, liberty, etc. However - EVEN THOSE are not agreed upon. For example, a Christian friend of mine equates ministering to "kindness", whereas I think kindness is a quality that transcends all topics - and certainly, of someone does not want to be ministered to, doing it anyway could certainly be taken as unkind.
True, "bashing" on one another is not the answer. I just think it's dangerous to except people to agree and walk around with big goofy grins on their faces...I would love that too...but it isn't going to happen, unfortunately.

I also agree that religion should not play a role in when one person thinks they are better than another person. It does help however when your friends are on the same page as you when it comes to religion. I have found this out several times, and because some of them try to make me question my beliefs or give me a hard time about going to church, it made me begin to doubt if they were really my friend in the first place.

I have to agree with you completely. Personally when someone bashes me I just simply choose to ignore it. It's very difficult not to just do to them, what they did to me. But I look at it from the point of view that if I ignore them and pitty them for their own personal ignorance or rudeness, then I am in turn making this world a better place. Simply because I am not spreading the hate.

The problem is that with this christian controlled society we are constantly bombarded with nonsense. "In god we trust" on my money, and "under god" in my pledge. Then they block stem cell research and try to overturn abortion rights. They want to force their morality on every one else. Oh and then there's bush forcing me to pay, with my tax dollars, for his faith based initiative.
Please don't say that us atheists are ruining the country. Don't forget that our president is a fundamental christian, and oh yeah all the other presidents were some sort of believer too. So to answer your question, I can not respect a group of people who, in their actions, show me no respect!

The bashing doesn't work, you are right about that. My belief system tells me that we are all the children of God and God loves us equally. Remember the golden rule "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I think it all boils down to that. That is as far as how we treat our fellow mankind anyway.

It is good to be good. I respect people for doing right.
The world is good and evil. I do believe that the bible helps us understand how to deal with life's issues with morality. Morals is what a lot of people lack

You've made a good point. Everyone has the right to decide whether they believe in a higher power or none.It has nothing to do with their views or the right to be respected for them........
