I have an one-and-half-year-old female green-colored rose ring parakeet (Maharashtra, India). From 5-6 days,
1) she is scratching her stomach, legs and wings.
2) She has become more angry.
3) Her small feathers near legs are dropping off.
4) She pecks the other parakeets.

Since a couple of months, she used to sit at the corner of the wooden pelmet. We think something is biting her (like insects). We have also changed her sitting place.

She is eating regularly and her stool is normal.
She also gives response to us and the free birds outside.

Please help me, because we don't have a good vet nearby.

Please suggest much harmless medicines, because she is very delicate.

There are mite disks which can be purchased and mite sprays which would help with mites. A bird should have these reguardless. You did not mention a cage. The birds sitting spot must be totally washed, like a cage it might be in, to first kill off mites and then spray the bird gently with mite control which is purchased. Do not get into food or water. Read the directions on the label. Do NOT soak the bird or wash totally in water because a fear will develope, and do NOT use vaseline. Another consideration is humidity. Is it so dry that the bird is miserable? It can also be allergies but try the mite control first and immediately before it learns to pluck itself for relief. Remember that the other parakeets must be treated also and their "cages" to rid of the mites. Cleanliness is the key. If it is molting then there is special food for molting also. It will not hurt to try both at the same time and is inexpensive. Does your bird bathe at all? It should be given the option to bathe, most birds will.

The first thing you do is get the bird away from other birds. Next find a powder called SEVIN dust, 5% THERE ARE TWO STRENGTHS BE SURE YOU GET THE 5%. You must take every thing wood, cloth out from the birds area and gently take two pinches of the powder and place it underneath the wings next to the body;' one one each side and another pinch between her shoulderblades on her back and as gently as you can rub it in so that it gets on her skin. She isnt goign to like this but it will cure her if she has mites.

The reason I said to take out the wood and cloth is because mites will get off the bird when you put the powder on it and live in the wood and cloth and reinfect the bird. EVERY bird she has been in contact with is going to need to need to be treated similarly. change the cage floor EVERY DAY. Provide fresh food and water every day and include DARK GREEN leafy veggies tha thave been washed well.. Add squashes or other yellow veggies like carrots or ??? (I have no clue about what kinds of veggies you guys have over there... heheheh)

Just be sure to change the cage and keep it VERY CLEAN for the next two weeks. Do not use a whole lot of SEVIN dust on them, a little will go a very long way. The birds are going to need extra nutrition while being treated for the mites... (I would put the dust every where the birds might be put in your house) if there are mites there, but dont let you or the birds breathe a lot of it... Read all the directions!!!!

Oh dear. Sounds like mites to me! I'd smear Vaseline over the top part of her beak and over her legs. If the mites are starting to bury there, the Vaseline will suffocate them. Don't over do it, as she may eat the stuff. Also, try to keep it out of her nose! If she's got scaly mites that should help control it. They leave honey comb type markings on the beek and legs.

The other bit of information I can give you is to phone the vet and suggest what you can do. Sometimes they have cheap ideas. I know with rats we can use an oral horse wormer and feed them a tiny (smaller than a grain of rice) piece of it. The wormer is called IVERMECTIN. You can find it at most feed stores without a vet's prescription. I'd phone the vet to see what a bird sized amount is.

Everyone is suggesting mites, which it could very well be.Isolate your bird from others, this is important till you find out for sure what is wrong.Next step is to place a WHITE, CLEAN cloth or sheet over the cage at night.Next morning, examine the side of the sheet which was covering the cage. If mites are present, there will be evidence, red or black specks.
Your bird could also be suffering extreme moult, which they do occasionally, which case, you need to give your bird a tonic and possibly vitimin enriched food. Also, spray your bird with TEPID water to help relieve itchyness. She's getting angry because she is uncomfortable, which is understandable.

You can go to any pet shop who carries bird supplies and buy whats called a "Cage Gaurd" It is round but comes in a square box, you hang it on the cage with the inbedded twisty tie and cover your birds cage with the bird inside of it for 24 hours or over night. You can also use moth balls in the room for a while to rid the birds of mites. Just have to make sure they are placed somewhere away from your bird and that your bird can not get to them.

Well when a parakeet is losing feathers it is molting, they endure a slight loss of blood and become cranky. Also if there is other itching, it may be a small mite, get a mite treatment to hang in the cage, and as for loss of feathers try a vitamin supplement.

It sounds like she has mites or lice. There are sprays you can buy, but your best bet is seeing a vet. If you can't go see them, at least call a respectable veterinarian and explain your situation.

Really, you should not even own parakeets if you do not have the means to take them to a vet. They are as deserving of proper care as are any other pet.

I'm thinking it is mites. Unfortunately you need a Vet. They are the only ones who can get you the meds you need.
The drug is called Ivermectin and is dangerous unless prescribed by a doctor.
It is contagious so keep her away from your other birds and the wild ones.

could be MITES...bathe her and wash her with soap. Don't immerse her head under water, hold it so she can't bite, and hold her under a running faucet while you soap her up and rinse her.

You can blow dry her too just don't burn her-she won't be able to fly until her wings dry so don't klet her fall off something high.

get a Mirror for her to focus on...she either has mites, is lonely or is stressed.
