Ok. Here goes:

A man was passing through a village when he saw a shopkeeper crying. Upon being asked of his plight, the shopkeeper said that he had been robbed of his money the previous day without him knowing until the next morning. The man then asked the shopkeeper where he hid the money, to which the shopkeeper said this:

"In a lavender house without any rooms
the treasure lay secret in the mysterious gloom;
locked by a key of hatred and scorn
whose only escape is constricted and torn"

The man, who was quick of wit, immediately knew the answer to the riddle, as well as how the thief managed to steal it!

Can you figure out the answer? The first post to give where the money was hidden and how it was stolen will win. Good luck!

Could it be the money was kept in a doghouse? (house without rooms)
The money hidden inside the back of the doghouse (the treasure lay secret in the mysterious gloom)
The dog is chained to the doghouse. (locked by a key of hatred and scorn)
To get to the money he would have to squeeze his hand into the doghouse with bad results (constricted and torn)

Therefore he would have to lure the dog away with something...(some meat perhaps?) then take the money.

Just a wild wild guess...Just thinking laterally...

The money was hidden by the "shopkeeper" in a swiss offshore bank account, the shoekeeper code name MR.s. was actually a russian KGB agent kiven the nickname shoekeeper for his ability in stoping allied force secret agents movments across the foothills of moscow.
the money was stolen by a fraudulent man named Mr. Hans
Lavenden " who gained the trust of the shoekeeper while working for him as a go between the russian Government and the KGB secret service.
The money was obtained by mr.s code named "shoekeeper" from an inaropriate arms deal with a german client with which Hans lavender was compleatly apposed and in turn stole the money and turned it over to the russian government in exchange for his saftey which they only where to happy to do for such a patriot as he mr hans lavender that is.
Hans stole the money by forging false documents to represent himself as the shoekeeper thus gaining accsess to his accounts.
The russian government captures the operative "shoekeeper"
and lock him in an unidentified military prison called Blashtovitsky which is translated the palace of Gloom.
As you can see the shoekeeper was filled with hatred and felt scorned by his former compadre " Hans lavender " who turned him in, it is however unclear from my sources but it is suggested that MR.s code named shoekeeper was killed by hanging in the prison, hence the reference in his poem too being constricted by the rope that killed him and his only escape from the highly secured prison was death.
