B.C. means before Christ. A.D. means after death. The reason for this is because we go by the christian calendar.

"BC" means Before Christ, "AD" means Anno Domini (they year of the Lord) NOT after death, if it was after death, our calendar would start in the year 33, not the year 1. This is actually being changed somewhat to be more PC, they're starting to call it "BCE" (before common era) and "CE" (common era), so now would be 2006 CE. Most calendars date from religious events or timelines. The Jewish year is different from the Christian year, and so is the Muslim, they are also based on religious events.
It was based on Christ because, until the last few centuries, it was a very, very bad idea to be anything but Christian in the Western world. Almost everyone was Christian, so the Christians set the rules (and the calendars).
Kinda like South Dakota today.

Question: "What is the meaning of BC and AD (B.C. and A.D.)?"
Answer: It is commonly thought that BC stands for "before Christ" and AD stands for "after death." This is only half correct. How could 1 B.C. have been "before Christ" and 1 A.D. been "after death"? BC does stand for "before Christ." AD actually stands for the Latin phrase "anno domini" which means "in the year of our Lord." The B.C. / A.D. dating system is not taught in the Bible. It actually was not fully implemented and accepted until several centuries after Jesus' death.
It is interesting to note that the purpose of the BC / AD dating system was to make the birth of Jesus Christ the dividing point of world history. However, when the B.C. / A.D. system was being calculated, they actually made a mistake in pinpointing the year of Jesus' birth. Scholars later discovered that Jesus was actually born in around 4-6 BC, not 0 AD. That is not the crucial issue. The birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ are the "turning points" in world history. It is fitting, therefore, that Jesus Christ be the separation of "old" and "new." BC was "before Christ" and since His birth, we have been living "in the year of our Lord." Philippians 2:10-11, "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

B.C. Means before Christians
A.D. Means After Doubters
Time lines are based on Julian Dates See below.
The Julian day or Julian day number (JDN) is the (integer) number of days that have elapsed since Monday, January 1, 4713 BC in the proleptic Julian calendar 1. That day is counted as Julian day zero. Thus the multiples of 7 are Mondays. Negative values can also be used. Today (UTC) the value is 2453934.
The Julian Date (JD) is the number of days (with decimal fraction of the day) that have elapsed since 12 noon Greenwich Mean Time (UT or TT) of that day. Rounding to the nearest integer gives the Julian day number. Currently the value is 2453934.13056.
The Julian day number can be considered a very simple calendar, where its calendar date is just an integer. This is useful for reference, computations, and conversions. The Julian day system was introduced by astronomers to provide with a single system of dates that could be used when working with different calendars and to unify different historical chronologies. Apart from the choice of the zero point and name, this Julian day and Julian date are not related to the Julian calendar.

Adrian N is correct. A.D. does NOT mean after death. Remember, Jesus lived for at least 33 years. If B.C. is Before Christ, there would be a 33 year gap between B.C. and A.D.
A.D. is the Latin words Anno Domini, which in English is "Year of our Lord."
Here's the etymology:
Medieval Latin anno Domini: Latin anno, ablative of annus, year + Latin Domini, genitive of Dominus, Lord.

B.C. = before christ, and A.D. = After death of jesus christ. Time stood still at the birth and death of jesus christ. Everything (TIME) in history even to now revolves around these two special events.

B.C. = Before Christ
A.D. = Anno Domini (In the year of the Lord)
Its only logical that our timeline is based on Christ, because he happens to be the Creator of this earth.....

B.C. means the time BEFORE CHRIST (the dates of events that took place before the birth of Jesus)
A.D. means ANNO DOMINI (a date indicating how many years have passed since the birth of Jesus, bear in mind that the abbreviation may appear before the date ( such as a.d. 1988), or it may appear after the date (such as 1988 a.d.) It is a Latin phrase meaning “in the year of our Lord.”

Before Christ and Anno Domini (which means in the year of the lord)
why the timeline is based on Jesus, I do not know.
That's why there is BCE and CE (before common era, common era) for those who prefer a non biased timeline.
