I speak many languages, but for most of the business world, i only need English. I sometimes need Spanish and Thai, but never for business. Did you know that Chinese is only understood by Chinese, nobody understands it outside China, it's the least used language in the international business sense. People who say that it's the most useful language are wrong and I have never met a Chinese or Indian businessman that did not speak good English. You can go anywhere in the world and meet someone who speaks English, but the same isn't true about any other language.

The three main languages would be English, French and Chinese. Resortcaroline is wrong to say that Chinese is only understood in China, its just difficult to pick up. Though it is not necessary in the more metropolitan cities to understand Chinese it goes a long way with customers if you make an effort, even when you get the tones mixed up.

If you are a lucky English speaker,
learn Japanese, Chinese, German/French/Norwegian/Spanish.

Japanese has the rich customers. You would love to have business trip there.... enjoy the food, hotspring and other goodies there ...paid, buy some Hi-Tech gadgets, try to chat with and dance with the Honda robots...

Chinese... yes....
China, Taiwan and Hong Kong has the huge market / potential customers.
China is one of the factories for the world.
If you can not speak that language, how can you be the greater-asia region manager? You can be deaf and blind and just rely on interpreters!? Chinese are everywhere, too. You will definitely have staff and colleagues who speaks Chinese.

German/French/Norwegian/Spanish...
it depends of whether you like to deal with whom and where you want to do businesss.... and what kind of business you are interested in... think about their national industries and customer base....

Norway has free education up to post-degree courses...
so I guest they will have good rich income & are up-marketly customers... and also be good staff or bosses!!

Want to do business with German car manufacturers?

French.... it is more romantic ... and not quite the top choice for business. Unless you love to do business with French guys and French ladies... for some special reasons ;)

Spanish is comparatively easy as I was told and many people in hotter place speak it in both Europe & Americas. Are you particularlly interested in their income or manufacturing industries in Spain, Mexico & Western Americas?

English is the international language of business, German is the most common first language in Europe and Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world (by population) and is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and therefore might be useful in the not so distant future.
