Test all high school students must pass in order to graduate? Reading, writing, math and science. They take it their sophmore year and have junior and senior years to pass whatever portion they failed.

I personally exceeded all the standards every time I took AIMS with absolutely no preparation or practice for it.

I graduated recently (less than 3 years ago) and I am absolutely amazed that students cannot pass such an easy test even though they are given 3 or more attempts. If they haven't learned enough to pass the test than they do no deserve to graduate. A high school diploma is not a certificate of acceptable attendance, its a mark of personal academic achievement.

The AIMS test is a cummulative test that measures if a student has met the minimum standards to graduate. That's not a bad thing. Kids are tested in all grades, beginning in third, but if they don't pass they can still move to the next grade. However, since Arizona has so many students that didn't learn English as a primary language, a lot of smart kids drop out of school because they cannot read well enough in English to pass. Also, special education students are required to take the test at their gradel level, rather than their ability level. They get accommodations, but if all it took were accommodations to get a special ed kid up to grade level, schools would already be doing that.
