Should you just ignore it like you didn't hear it or laugh it off so the person isn't too embarassed?

You do and say nothing.
This is one of the quirks of etiquette. One is assumed not to be in control of flatulence. Everyone present is supposed to pretend it never happened. Saying anything just calls attention to it and makes people embarassed.
This is different than when someone burps. One is assumed to be in control of burps, so you are expected to say "Excuse me" or something similar if you burp.
I don't make the rules, I just know about them!

It depends on the situation. If it's like at a formal dinner or some gay **** like that, I would ignore it. If my gf just ripped one while we were watchign tv, I'd grab her head and fart in her face. And I have before.

emilypost.com offers no guidance regarding either "fart", "flatulence", or "flatus". But wouldn't a returned fart of roughly equal magnitude put everyone on the same footing? This is the essence of good manners.

Well, if the person keeps quiet and tries to ignore his own action, then follow suit and keep quiet about it. If it stinks bad, just excuse yourself and go get fresh air.

if it was a girl i'd laugh too
if it was my friends i'd just ignore it
