So I got pretty burnt today, pretty much on my front side. I want to get my back and sides the same color as the rest of me without burning up whats already burnt. Is slathering on sunscreen over the damaged area good enough?

Sunscreen might work, depends how you're getting your tan. I usually go to a tanning salon and cover the burnt parts (usually my chest) with a small towel...it usually works.

you should give yourself at least couple days break from the sun for the burnt area. what i've done is use Ombrelle spray which seems to block the sun. use it on your chest and just lay on your front to tan your back. i did the same thing as you over a week ago and now to even the tan i just lay on my front, but i don't use lotion for my back, which i don't recommend.
