7 minutes or so. It depends on the human though. If it were a child, probably about 3 or 4 minutes would kill them. But a large adult might stay alive up to 7 or 8 minutes. Although however long it takes to kill them, it takes about 3/4 of that time before it causes irreperable brain damage from lack of oxygen.

It also depends if it is complete asphyxiation, like carbon monoxide, or if there is still a good amount of oxygen in the air. If they're in a garage too long with a car running, it might take up to 20 minutes before it builds up enough to kill them, but if they have their mouth over the exhaust pipe or something, I'd say much less.

Asphyxiation by strangling and drowning would probably take about the 7 minute average time because it would be cutting off 100% of the oxygen (unlike with Carbon Monoxide where some oxygen might still be in the air). If they were being strangled with a wire or something and were able to pull at it or something, they might be able to buy themselves a couple extra minutes.

Why are you asking this question anyway? You better not be trying to asphyxiate somebody... Because if you are, the cops will be able to track your internet records and see this question anyway... So I'll just assume this if for your health class or something........
