You may also need to do diagnostics on the computer. When was the last time you defragged your hard drive?
Click on "My Computer". then right-click onto "C Drive", and left-click on "properties". In the middle, click "Disk Cleanup". It'll collect everything, and give you an option of a ton of things to delete from the hard drive.
After that, go back to that spot. Click the tab at the top that says, "Tools". Then click on "Defragment Now".
It'll take you to a page that has 2 long bars. Click on your C Drive, and "Defragment".
If it's really fragmented, then it'll take a while to finish...grab a sandwich or cook a pizza and watch some TV for a bit...or read a good book.
When it's done, it should be running faster.
If not, then look at the other answers above.

Hey! That's something pretty annoying when ur system sucks.
Do try to minimize the no. of icons from ur desktop.

It's for Advanced users only
-----------------------------------
U may type "msconfig" in the start>Run menu and go to the "startup tab". U find all the programs list that get loaded on booting ur computer. Remove the check mark from the programs that u dont want to get started at the bootup.
This will drastically improve ur system performance. Promised.

You memory needs upgrading by the sounds of it. If that is not the case try removed non important programs that start up then the computer is booted. This can cut down on boot up times. The more you have the longer boot up takes. I would also clean out the internet cahce, defrag your computer and also check for spy-ware, ad-ware and run an anti-virus progamm as these too can slow down your computer.

You probably have a low amount of RAM and Windows hogs it all when it starts up (it can regularly use 128mb). If this has gradually gotten worse up until now, than I'd suggest you upgrade your RAM with www.crucial.com . It's easy to find what kind you need and RAM is really cheap.
