Here is something worth knowing if you have a mobile phone ..

Have you ever wondered why phone companies don't seem interested in trying to prevent the theft of mobile phones? If you have ever lost, or had one stolen, and if you are on a plan, you still have to pay the plan approximately up to 24 months, and you have to buy another handset and enter into another contract. This is more revenue for the phone company.

There is a simple way of making lost or stolen mobiles useless to thieves and the phone companies know about it, but keep it quiet.

To check your mobile phone's serial number, key in the following on your phone:

star-pound-zero-six-pound ( * # 0 6 # ) and a fifteen digit code will appear on the screen. This is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it safe. Should your mobile phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset, so even if the thief changes the sim card,

your phone will be totally useless.

You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody did this, there would be no point in stealing mobile phones.

You may want to send this to as many people with mobiles as possible.

I agree with a lot of your points but some of them need a bit of fine tuning.
When your phone is lost/stolen you don't necessarily have to buy a new phone. You could obtain a new handset from a friend or somewhere else or just reactivate an old phone you already have in your possession. You don't have to get a new contract either if you do buy a new phone. The same contract is used even though you may swap phones numerous time throughout the life of the contract. Or, you could just cancel your account but you would be charged approximately $150 cancellation fee.

Yes, every phone has an ESN or electronic serial number that is on the back of the phone, that is no secret. When your phone is lost you obviously need to call your provider and make them aware of this so that you will not be charged for calls you are not making. Your provider will flag your phone as lost/stolen at that time so that no one else can use it. Thieves can still buy and sell your phone on the street or wherever because buyers have no way of knowing the phone is stolen unless the buyer calls the provider first and inquires, which almost never happens.

My advice is to never buy a phone from someone you do not know or buy a phone off of ebay. You may end up with a very expensive paper weight. Once a phone is marked stolen it will always be that way unless the original owner recovers the stolen phone.

I know these things because i worked in the fraud department of a major telecommunications company for two years. Rules and regulations may differ slightly with other companies.

can't you just call your cellphone company, and get the plan canceled if you told them that your phone was stolen, and get another phone with the same plan or contract?...but anyway if i'm totally wrong about that,...that would suck...but thanks for the info...
