If your spouse is your sponsor, you can be denied your permanent resident status. If you currently have a work permit (temporary green card) and can prove that you are capable of supporting yourself you may be able to stay. You also have the right to find another co-sponsor. Basically what happens is you sponsor yourself but you have someone like your employer sign a contract with the government stating that if for any reason you cannot support yourself they will help you. Contact the BCIS for the form.
