Sometimes whitefish has them in the supermarket. My sister worked at the fish market and told me about them. What are they called?

1) These are parasitic worms growing inside of the loins of certain fish, such as swordfish or shark. I don't have the scientific name of the worms.
2) Any such parasites need to be removed by the supermarket staff before wrapping
3) Don't buy the fish

Maggots - the larvae of flies. If you are talking about worms found internally, it's different depending on the species of fish. They can be the larvae of various parasites, some of which are harmful to the fish, and some of which may be harmful to you as well. Get quality fresh fish from a good store and you should not see this. I would be highly suspect of anyone saying that little worms on fish is 'normal'... it's not.
