if im not mistaken spain had conquered mexico and then revolted. Either way i think we would still have the same problems. If spain was in control of mexico right now i dont think it would really raise their standard of living by enough to make a difference.

Spain only got its act together during the dictatorship of Franco and the post-Franco, monarchy-led governmental changes.

Latin America's problems arose due to the fact that the colonizers only wanted to exploit the territory. They weren't worried about laying the groundwork for viable future states; they just wanted to make profit for king, god and themselves. Add to that a series of unstable governments, overly powerful militaries and a constant export-based economic situation and you've got a region that simply can't get its act together.

It's not something that can be fixed by bringing back a power that controls from far away.

Also, lets not forget that if Spain took back everything that it owned at some prior point, Spain would still control:

The American Southwest
Florida
Parts of Alabama
Louisiana (Spain acquired this from France and then, when Napoleon invaded Spain, he made the Spanish give it back and then it was sold to the US).

Food for thought.

Spain would have taken America after taking Mexico and everybody would have fought it out until either one side or the other was gone

Maybe you would own Mexico if Spain had conquered them

Or I'm dumb, either way

super question. Theoretically, there are a number of compelling motives for the US to annex the the remainder of Mexico. a million. Southern Mexico has a plenty smaller border. Even the mexicans can patrol it. 2. each time the US has won a chew of Mexico interior the previous it has made money on the deal. 3. US regulation could recommend minimum wages, which might particularly plenty gut the full rationalization for the present invasion. Why could Pedro freeze his chihuahua off in Chicago whilst he could make the comparable money in Tijuana? 4. US regulation, could in concept, freshen up governmental corruption south of the Rio Grande... in concept. 5. Lotsa organic components and coffee-value exertions, even at minimum wages. 6. the yank South is experiencing a extensive actual sources growth. What in case you extra over a million extra sq. acres of even warmer land? 7. At Mexico's narrowest component, and with present day technologies and infinite affordable exertions, the Tehuantepec Canal undertaking could desire to ultimately be found out. this could placed a important, present day, transcontinental canal on American soil which might herald billions of greenbacks each 365 days. nicely, those are the theories. somewhat, annexation could value us billions of greenbacks, 1000's of lives, and wreck the yank way of existence.
