And I have it on good authority that this is a world wide problem.....
I mean, come on. How un-hygenic is that when its boucing around in the back of car?

I think the problem is not the bread, or the bag. It sounds like the problem is the back of your car. I'd like to know on what "good authority" you think this is a world-wide problem. In other countries, you might not even be supplied with a bag for the bread.

Baguettes, or any other fresh bakery bread does not contain the same type of preservatives that comercial breads (such as Wonder) do. This means that is not generally advised to keep bakery baked bread for the length of time you would keep commercial bread. Most bakeries know this, and work under the assumption that the bread is going to be eaten quickly, if not immediately. Suggested usage is within about 12 hours. Day old bread from a bakery is going to be dry, hard, and may even start to mold already, depending on the conditions where the bread is stored (your trunk, your house, etc.).

because it makes you want to tuck in on the walk from the shop to your car. That makes you buy more because you never have enough, therefore they sell more.
