What the heck do people mean when they say "Jesus is Lord?" I thought Mr. Jesus was god's boy.?

Let us look at some definitions OK?

GOD 1 capitalized : the supreme or ultimate reality: as a : the Being perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness who is worshipped as creator and ruler of the universe
This appears to be a title.

Lord: 1 : one having power and authority over others: a : a ruler by hereditary right or preeminence to whom service and obedience are due
This also appears to be a title.

Christ:1 capitalized a : the expected king and deliverer of the Jews b : JESUS 1
This also appears to be a title.

Jehovah: Psalms 83:18 "That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth."

The personal name of the only true God. His own self-designation. Jehovah is the Creator and, rightfully, the Sovereign Ruler of the universe. “Jehovah” is translated from the Hebrew Tetragrammaton, ????, which means “He Causes to Become.” These four Hebrew letters are represented in many languages by the letters JHVH or YHWH.
This looks like a name.

Jesus: Matthew 3:16 "After being baptized Jesus immediately came up from the water; and, look! the heavens were opened up, and he saw descending like a dove God’s spirit coming upon him. 17 Look! Also, there was a voice from the heavens that said: “This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved.”
Definition: The only-begotten Son of God, the only Son produced by Jehovah alone. This Son is the firstborn of all creation. By means of him all other things in heaven and on earth were created. He is the second-greatest personage in the universe. It is this Son whom Jehovah sent to the earth to give his life as a ransom for mankind, thus opening the way to eternal life for those of Adam’s offspring who would exercise faith. This is the name of the Son of Jehovah GOD.

Holy Spirit: Definition: The Hebrew word ru´ach and the Greek pneu´ma, which are often translated “spirit,” have a number of meanings. All of them refer to that which is invisible to human sight and which gives evidence of force in motion. The Hebrew and Greek words are used with reference to (1) wind, (2) the active life-force in earthly creatures, (3) the impelling force that issues from a person’s figurative heart and that causes him to say and do things in a certain way, (4) inspired utterances originating with an invisible source, (5) spirit persons, and (6) God’s active force, or holy spirit.
Discussion of Holy Spirit What is the holy spirit?

A comparison of Bible texts that refer to the holy spirit shows that it is spoken of as ‘filling’ people; they can be ‘baptized’ with it; and they can be “anointed” with it. (Luke 1:41; Matt. 3:11; Acts 10:38) None of these expressions would be appropriate if the holy spirit were a person.
Jesus also referred to the holy spirit as a “helper” (Greek, pa·ra´kle·tos), and he said that this helper would “teach,” “bear witness,” “speak,” and ‘hear.’ (John 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26; 16:13) It is not unusual in the Scriptures for something to be personified. For example, wisdom is said to have “children.” (Luke 7:35) Sin and death are spoken of as being kings. The correct identification of the holy spirit must fit all the
scriptures that refer to that spirit. With this viewpoint, it is logical to conclude that the holy spirit is the active force of God. It is not a person but is a powerful force that God causes to emanate from himself to accomplish his holy will.—Ps. 104:30; 2 Pet. 1:21; Acts 4:31.

Most people have been confused as to the definitions of the above words and when the say "Jesus is Lord" They think that they are saying Jesus is GOD. This is the Trinity teachings that have confused many people through out much of religious history. The Catholic Encyclopedia states in plain language that the Trinity (Trinity definition: 1 : the unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three persons in one Godhead according to Christian dogma )(Dogma definition 1 a : something held as an established opinion; especially : a definite authoritative tenet b : a code of such tenets c : a point of view or tenet put forth as authoritative without adequate grounds) is a mystery AND that it can not be supported by Bible reference.

The Bible relates Jehovah GOD as the ruler of the universe.
The Bible relates Jesus Christ as his first born SON.
The Bible relates the Holy Spirit as Jehovah GOD's active force.

So now when some one says "Jesus is Lord" to you in the future you have a basis to as them "what do you mean?"

A lord is someone who has power and authority, thus Jesus being referred to as Lord in a religious sense falls under that same thought meaning. I'm not quite sure why this is so confusing for people...reading the answers you've gotten so far is rather interesting. God the Father is indeed the father of Jesus Christ (hence, Jesus is called the Son of God). They are often referred to as being "one", but this does not mean they are one and the same person, as many seem to assume. Rather, they are one in purpose (meaning they both have the same goal of having us all return to live with them after this life). Also, there is a third person in the Godhead, which is the Holy Ghost. He is not a person of flesh and bones, but rather a spirit to help in guiding us towards what is good and right. Thus, the Holy Ghost can dwell within us. If he were a person with flesh, he obviously could not do this. It would be like me trying to dwell in you. If God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost were the same person physically, it would make for a rather schizophrenic individual, particularly during Christ's baptism when God spoke from heaven and the Holy Ghost lit upon Jesus in the form of a dove.

Another term used for Jesus is Master; it depends upon your translation.

These terms all indicate that Jesus was regarded by his disciples as their leader on earth but still fully recognizing that God (Yahweh) is the God of heaven and earth.

Later in the Bible we learn that Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God, the Father, are all one as parts of the Holy Trinity.

The Trinity is the term employed to signify the central doctrine of the Christian religion -- the truth that in the unity of the Godhead there are Three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, these Three Persons being truly distinct one from another.

Lord is just one of the personas of Jesus. You never hear God is Lord because that's Jesus's role. It doesn't really make sense if you believe that God and Jesus are one and the same, but if you believe that the three are one (and the Holy Spirit), then you get to understand their different roles.

So basically, one of Jesus's roles is as a lord...as in Lord of All.

Hence, "Jesus is Lord"

In the Psalms God the Father says that He made Jesus the ruler (Lord) over all things. People could also be saying that Jesus is THEIR Lord. That help?

He is Lord. He's the Lord God. He is God. He became man to provide salvation. He is litterally the Word of God, that part of God that spoke and out of nothing created everything. He is Lord because He has all power and authority at this time. He is the one we owe our allegiance to. He is our soveriegn Lord. Our King.

When He descended to Earth, He became the Son. So He's the Son of the Father. The Lamb of God. That's why the Jews were told to observe Passover and kill a lamb after it lived with them. It was a telling of a prophetic event that would happen later.

That is the mystery of the faith. Yes, Jesus is referred to as the Son of God. But he is also known as Emmanuel, which means God with us. As Christians, we believe in a triune God, which means God in three parts. This is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There is God the father, and there is God in the flesh (the son, Christ), and the Holy Spirit, which is the promised counselor that Christ sent after the ascention. The introduction of the Gospel of John explains this a little better.

Jesus is King - we resolve ourselves to Jesus as our ruler, (Lord) and Savior. When we acknowledge him as Lord we surrender all authority to him.

Its ALMOST (but not quite) the same thing as when you elect a president, you are giving the man you voted for, Authority over you, to make decisions in your best interest.

Without recognizing Jesus as Lord, as the Son of God, there is no salvation from one's sin - sin brings death and eternal punishment.

The words God and Lord are titles. Just like the words Man and boy, cousin, or daughter are. You are correct though about who Jesus is however. At his own baptism the heavens opened up and Gods voice was heard saying......"This is my son the beloved."

Just like you and I have names, God and his son also have names. Psa. 83:18 calls God Almighty, Jehovah. And well, we all know Jesus right? His son.
