Yes, Muslims use moon for calender and sun for the worship timings.
This has a deep scietific reason behind. Scientists say, moon is the best source of finding the year start.
There will not be any leap year if sight of moon is used for starting months.
It is deep scietific knowledge I am not fully aware of it but you can confirm by a knowledgeable person.

what's wrong with people calling Allah a moon God?
i am Muslim and Allah is not the moon God, stop the lies. do u think u know better than me about Islam?
the reason for the symbol is because the month of Ramadan is one of the most important month in Islam. this is the month of which we can fast. this is the month of which Quran came down on Muhammad. we tell the beginning of the Ramadan by looking at the moon shape, when the moon takes a certain shape we declare the beginning of Ramadan. moon is just a decoration.

it has nothing to do with worshiping it because i know many idiots will tell you that. they are simply ignorants.
People lived in the deserts back then there was no clocks or any thing that could make them know dates and times but astrology.
they can know the beginning and end of the month by looking to the moon.
the moon became like an Islamic calendar so they used it to know when the month of Ramadan is coming so they can start fasting etc...
so it's nothing but a calendar. and used as a symbol just like the cross is used as a symbol for Christianity.
i hope that helps

The symbol is pre-Islamic and wasn't discarded. The moon and star (Venus actually) belong to the ancient Arabian goddess trinity: Al-Lat, Al-'uzza and Manat. Al-Lat is said to have gifted mankind with the camel saddle, which enabled the great trade routes in myrrh and frankincense between "Arabia Felix" (Yemen) and Palmyra (now Syria)
Moon and star were also depicted on ancient coins of Byzantium and many cities ... today they are seen on the flags of Turkey, Algeria, Pakistan, Tunisia, Singapore (representing historic connection), and a few of the Central Asian states. The old pre-republican flag of Egypt had moon and 3 stars ... very common and widespread symbol...

They use moon because they follow lunar calendar for some religious actions ( fastening, pilgrimage ).
I don't think they use star, maybe only Turkish as a symbol of state.
And Allah knows better.
Thank you

it originated from the PAGAN MOON DIETY of the middle east a long time ago. Mohammad chose one pagan god "allat" aka "allah" over the other pagan gods because he wanted Islam to be like judaism and christianity. look it up my friend. peace.

They worship a pagan moon God. The Kaba and the Hajj are pagan in origin (don't take my word, look it up).
