It seems to me all the illustrations of the layers of the atmosphere are blown out of scale in school text books and in other references.

Troposphere 0 - 12 km
Stratosphere 12 km - 50km
Mesosphere 50km - 80km
Ionosphere 80km - 120km

Maybe some people just dont realize how big the Earth is. Your image is of the entire planet, whose diameter is 12,750 km (+/-). Of course the atmosphere is going to look thin in comparison - its 1% the size of that.

Yes, it is VERY thin. Even thinner than your picture shows. If you look at actual photographs from space, you can see how thin it really is. You can't even see it al all in the last one taken by Apollo 8.

I would say just the people who really think about the atmosphere would realize this.

probibly only the people who pay attention in school and actually care about the earth and astronomy. people like me.
