The best way to read the bible is to have some guidance. Someone you can turn to when you do not know to interpret some of the chapters. Maybe go to a bible study group at your church. Join some form of bible study group, as well as make sure it is not a group that will lead you astray. Also ask God for guidance in understanding his words.

With me the best way to study the Bible is to have a good translation, I use the Amplified or the New American Bible. Have a Concordance, a Bible dictionary and paper and pencil. Start by reading one chapter at a time. Re-read it about 2 or three times. (If you have other translations read that chapter in those translations as well) Then, start one verse at a time and develop a theme. Who, what, when, where, why and how. It's very important to read the introduction to each book too. Get a historical background check on the time and circumstances of that time. (both secular and spiritual).
All of this is made possible by the indwelling Holy Spirit so ALWAYS remember to pray before during and after you study. Never take anything for face value only, scripture has layers and layers of meaning and depth.
May God bless you on your journey!

At one time future Kings of Israel were required to write with their own hand, the first five chapters in the Bible. I tried it once when I had a lot of night hours to stay awake, and you sure notice things you wouldn't otherwise. I was in the book of Numbers when my notebooks burned in a house fire. If you are just starting a serious study, get a Bible, notebook, Crudens concordance, and a good Bible dictionary. For now, just read, looking up anything you don't understand, and if you still don't, look for a good Church (My choice is Baptist) and ask the Pastor for someone who will help you. God blesses a sincere seeker of His will and His word. I will pray for you.

Find a grounded, Bible-based church... one that teaches ONLY from the Bible. They will probably have a study group that meets one night a week. This is the perfect way to learn with others.... you will be able to analyze topics in depth, discuss your questions, etc...
Also, a Concordian is a helpful learning guide, as it explains the scriptures in depth, and also includes a lot of historical information relavent to the topics & time of the Bible.

This is going to sound silly as anything, but I found since I started reading a child's version to my kids at night before bed and then read the same section in the bible I was able to get a better concept of it. I have to admit tho, I still find it difficult to get thru the so and so is the son of who was the son of who was the son of....parts.

A great place to start is with the Gospel of John.
Then his three short Epistles.
Pray that God would give you understanding of what you are reading.
