The body is placed in a combustible box and put in a cremation chamber. Usually gas is used to reduced the body by heat to small bone fragments. When the fragments are pulverized, they are reduced to the consistency of coarse sand or crushed seashells. Then the remains can be put in a Niche, a compartment or cubicle for the memorialization of permanent placement of an urn or scattered in your loved one's favorite place.

As some have said, the body is in a container-a casket or heavy cardboard liner. The "oven" is called a retort. The container is placed in the retort, then turn on the gas and ignite. It is done electronically.
The retort burns at approx. 1200 degrees F. The process takes about 3 hours.
Once the retort has cooled, the cremains (cremated remains) are removed, large bits are crushed, and placed in a temporary urn to await pickup from the family. At that point you may buy an urn, scatter the ashes, bury them or put them in a columbarium.

YOU don't. The funeral home does. They place the body in a container, usually a cardboard box or coffin you have purchased, then they are slid into a large oven which is extremely hot and burns everything in the oven, then it is cooled and the ashes are extracted and put into another container. There are usually a few bone fragments and the ashes are gray and very sticky-they cling.
