the way you presented your question confused some of the people who tried answering this question. i believe that question is somewhat like "is there anything wrong with using a spoon to eat meals?"
yeah, i've heard of that story and i was upset by that story -- how could teachers and principals be so mean that they would consider "using a spoon" as offending. what they're doing is not only offending, but also inhumane. there is no need to reprimand somebody, especially a child -- for "not using correct table manners", in school, there are more unruly students in there -- why not reprimand them instead? i know it's sickening, but what can we do?

The issue is the way the Filipino culture holds a spoon in one hand and their fork in the other. They then eat using a two handed method to push their food onto one utensil or the other.
Yes, many Filipino natives still use their hands for some foods. They use the first three fingers and their thumb to deftly pick up their food and eat it. No, they cannot eat soup that way. (I just know someone would say something about soup!)
Since the Filipino student is now living in a new culture, they need to adapt to that culture. The people that humiliated the student need to remember that not all people have the same cultural standards or manners. Rather than humiliate, they should learn something about the other person's culture and then teach that person about their culture.
When I travel overseas, I do my best to learn the local culture and abide by it when possible. I definitely do not want to find myself insulting people without even realizing it. It is much more fun to insult them when I KNOW I am insulting them. :P
Good luck!

I'm a Filipino and we didn't invent the metal spoon however during our beginnings,we discovered a better way to eat without using our hands coz we found out that it contained millions of germs. Whatever the reason of having a spoon to eat or not,who cares? this is not an issue and it shouldn't be brought up. are you a Filipino,or one of those who discriminate Filipinos? For the record,it was the Spaniards who introduced us a proper etiquette during the invading to our country.

Umm.. your question doesn't make much sense. I know lots of Canadians who use forks and spoons. I know in Medieval England they only used spoons and knives. I'm also pretty good with a set of chopsticks. But seriously.. everyone eats that way.. fork, spoon and knife too.

This was a shameful incident which happened. Alll cultures should be respected for their varied practices. The adults in the school behaved very badly in that instance and, rest assured, it should not reflect on how all Canadians feel.
