Ok there are several definitions for it, and believe me I've often asked myself it too.
What I have found out is that love is patient and kind. It's an emotion and connection you have towards someone and would anything for them. It's where you care about them. It's when you find yourself telling them anything and know that you can trust them in the long run. Love comes with the territory of being Honest, Trustworthy, and Committed.
You think about them
You feel safe when you are around them
You can't stop reading their text messages
You remember little things of what they have said in the past
You feel an over amount use of joy when you see them
You get sweaty palms
Your knees start to buckle
You lose short of breath
Your get butterflies in your stomach
These are just some helpful hints that I've learned, and there are so many other factors leading up to it.
But, all in all you just know.

Love is not an emotion, as a previous poster said. Love is a _choice_. Love is what keeps you faithful when you have a chance to cheat and think you won't get caught. Love is what keeps you in a relationship that you've committed to when it's not all that you expected. Love is what makes you work overtime when the kid needs a winter coat, but you'd rather stay home and watch TV. It's easy to stay in a relationship when the good stuff is happening, but love is what gets you through the bad stuff.

It's an emotion, so it's not like marriage or sex, which are physical things that can be quantified.
Being that, it's subjective and can be interpretted differently by everyone, so no one person can say what love is in one definition. Everyone has to choose for themselve what they consider to qualify as the feelings and emotions of love, and likewise guess if it is the same in their partners or whoever.

Very few people really know what love is. It's something you have to have in you when you're not in a relationship. It doesn't come FROM being in a relationship.
When you love, you share yourself with another and you enjoy them sharing themselves with you. You enjoy each other's companionship and you don't freak out when you're apart (although you miss each other).
You let each other come and go as you please, and you encourage each other to become better people. When problems arise, you talk them over and resolve them before they grow too big.
You love your partner's touch, even a toe rubbing on your foot. You admire your mate. You're thankful to their parents for raising such a great person. But you don't cling to them or limit their other relationships. You trust, because love doesn't betray.

i always thought love as a bonding of 2 souls (shared love) or a leaving part of ones soul with someone they like (one way love)
love is an emotion that binds hearts and souls to another.
love is the one and only truth, not that love is true between 2 people but simply that love is.
not even time is more true than love

I agree. Many, many people confuse Love with infatuation or puppy love crushes.

There is no real answer to this question but what I have learned of what love is to me and that is the word LOVE itself holds the answer.......
(L)isten: and validate them by hearing and empathizing.
(O)verlook: their minor character flaws as they will overlook yours.
(V)alue: who they are and what they mean to you.
(E)xpress: how you love them not just with words but with actions.

loving someone means you do not want to hurt that someone, give up your egoistic needs to to something for that person and feel good about it.
