The word translated Peter dose mean rock...but the word Jesus used in the next part of the verse is a different word that can also be translated rock but with a different meaning and in the feminin...The second word is not used a a name. Christ used a ply on words that had different meaning in usage of tht day... it was not to imply that peter was the foundation... but that the profession of faith was to be, future tense, to fondation... and that the founding of The Church was yet to be when those words were spoken.. The Church began at pentacost and it was indeed founded on the Apostles...All of them, not just Peter. An there is no provision for direct sucession of the apostelship... There were 12 + Paul that is all... no more Apostles/popes

I am not confused, and yes, I believe Jesus is speaking about Peter.
Perhaps you are confused by the Greek translation (Petra)? Remember, Jesus was not speaking Greek, and so he used the word "Kepha" both times...you might also consider that the protestant interpretation turns the whole exchange into a rebuke, which does not fit the context.

God/Jesus is refered to as the rock approximately 48 times in the Bible. Jesus called Simon "Peter" which by interpretation means "Petros" which by interpretation means pebble or small stone. Here Jesus is referring to himself as the rock and not Peter. Jesus had just refered to Simon as "Peter" and then goes on to refer to himself as the Rock upon which he built his church. Jesus said Upon this rock "I" will build "MY" Church. The Lord would never build his church on common man as man is on earth for a short time only. The Bible is clear on this subject as Jesus himself established the first Church and the "keys" of heaven and hell are contained in the Gospel message as if a person believes then they will go to Heaven and if not they will go to hell. The responsibility of preaching the Gospel is the responsibility of the Church hence the Church has the "keys" to Heaven and Hell.

I am not confused at all. Peter is not the rock.
What Peter said is the Rock.
What did he say?
In the 16th. verse----
Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And so He is.
Don't you find it interesting that 2000 years ago He came, He did, and we still believe what was said of Him?
I also think that the word believe is important.
With out belief it is impossible to please God.
It doesn't have to do with proof.
It has to do with belief.
If there were proof, then you wouldn't have to believe.
Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Furthermore it is written----------------John 20:29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
The blessing is, that you have been given the ability to believe.
OLAY!

No. I understand that:
The truth Peter confessed (that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God) is the rock on wich the church is built.

I have just discussed this recently.Yes Jesus was talking about himself. The word "peter" meant "a stone" so many people think that Jesus built his church on St.Peter, but Jesus was reffering to himself.(The stone which the builders rejected)People need to read more than one chapter to make their deductions.

You've not made it clear what you think the passage is talking about.
