Bed, Bath and Beyond usually has % off coupons that come in the mail. See if your neighbors are willing to share theirs if they don't use them. You could save on each item that way.
Tuesday Morning has good deals on silverware (eating utensils) that don't break when you touch them.
Personally, I recommend you buy what you need when you need it. You can almost always find that kind of stuff on sale somewhere. There are so many things I was told I needed that I never used. When money is tight (as it is for most college students) it's not necessary to be fully stocked.

The most "essential" thing you didn't mention is a can opener. Beyond that, gadgets will come and go, but good knives, good pans (stay away from Teflon if you can and go for good steel with copper bottoms), a can opener and a microwave will take you far.
If you really get into large scale cooking, then a stand mixer and a food processor are pretty great additions. But life won't end if you don't have them.

The best cooking utensil ever invented is a Cast Iron Frying pan- not fancy, but the best, the heat is distributed evenly in the pan. And of course some pots and pans, -

a Goof cook can cook just about anything with a knife, good sautee pan and a pair of metal tongs with super springy action. If you have all that and want more, I would suggest a waffle maker. They are awesome

I would say an electic griddle. We use ours to make pancakes, fry chicken, steak, even to grill vegies. My husband is a chef and this is the one thing he could never do without besides his spices.
