Most guys are usually trying to get the girl to be quiet and enjoy the silent moments. Sounds like he doesn't know how good he has it. I am very bad at small talk. Hate it in fact. I don't say anything that doesn't have a bit of meaning behind it. My wife however is a total chatterbox. So I listen and let her talk all she wants. Perhaps your bf simply thinks that to talk is to care. Try and explain that it is what you say, not how much you say it. People have different levels of what they expect in the amount of communication and you have to resolve that to a point that both of you are fairly happy.

The communication you seek is trust. Trust is hard to build to overcome the emotions such as jelousy. Establish a common bond.. go back as far or as basic as you need to be but find it and build on it. If you have to sit and say things like goo-goo-da, do it. It is important to make that part of the foundation of the realtionship solid because there is so much to be built on it that you will need it to be strong with no cracks or weak places. From time to time reinforce that foundation just to make sure. It is as important as your relationship and it just might depend on it.

Give him questions that maybe are out of the ordinary. You are beyond the small talk about his fav color and etc. See what he's really about. Ask him what he would qualities a woman should have to make her "the one". Find out what makes him laugh, what irritates him, what makes him feel warm and tingly inside.

Just talk his ear off. And when he starts complaining, just say to him, "but this is what you wanted.....jerk."
