It takes some time and lots of treats. Have a treat and tell him shake then pick up his paw and shake it, put it down tell him good boy and give him a treat do that afew more times then see if he has caught on yet. Labs are VERY smart he wil learn fast even if he is an old one. If he's a puppy he'll catch on quick. Just have a treat tho that makes it sooo easy to teach him that. Good luck and just don't get too mad at him if he is a puppy cuz he is GOING to chew up everything, shoes furniture whatever is laying around for at least the first 2 years.

I taught my dog by teaching her to sit then i put the treat on the other side of her head until she lifted up her paw then i gave her a treat do this over and over until she keeps the paw up a long time then shake the hand while it is up then give him less and less treat until he or she does it with no treat and no sign and just language

My mother in Laws Black Lab does that trick
Just keep picking up his paw and shaking it,while saying "Shake", give him a treat
After a while all you should be able to just hold your hand out and he'll give you his paw

Stand in front of the dog,& put your hand just above it's head, have your dog in a sitting position, hand above head, & kneel down in front of him/ her/, & say Shake?, as you hold out your hand to receive the paw. Do this over & over, til your dog realizes what you want.

If you can teach him to sit and raise a paw, you can. As for me, I could scarsely teach my dog to come to me without opening the refrigerator door first.

Put your hand out and say "Shake Hands." take your other hand and use it to put his paw on your outstretched hand and shake it.Then praise him and give him a treat. Repeat ...Repeat.... Repeat until he puts his paw on your hand with just the words and give him a treat again.
