Hezbollah was created in 1982, its political platform has consistently called for the destruction of Israel. 3 times in the past, Arab countries have attacked Israel in attempt to destroy them, Israel was able to take Arab land during those wars, which has made Israels enemies even angrier. As part of a 2005 United Nations resolution, Israel agreed to withdraw from these territories and Hezbollah was supposed to disarm. Israel followed the resolution, but Hezbollah did not. Hezbollah is known to be funded by Iran, who also agrees with the destruction of Israel, and has been the subject of UN and international pressure to stop its Nuclear program, probably as a distraction, Palestinian gunmen, (Hamas) entered Israel from the south on June 25th and abducted a soldier, Hezbollah began launching rockets from the north into Israel, (residential areas) as they would frequently do from time to time, followed by Hezbollah entering Israel and abducting 2 more Israeli soldiers and demanding some 1300 prisoners be released from Israeli jail. Naturally Israel opted to counter-strike with force, leading to a series of strikes against Lebanese targets and more rocket launches by Hezbollah into Israel.

A longer version of the current crisis is summarized on BBC news link below

Iran (through Hezbollah) is trying to draw Israel into a direct war. Remember when Saddam Hussein launched Scuds at Israel to try to widen the conflict. Iran suspects an impending conflict with the U.S. and insteading of waiting like Saddam did, Iran is being proactive. If Israel bites and strikes at Iran, then Iran can be the defender of the faith against the Zionist invaders. They will get tons more support from Muslim nations this way. So why not shoot missiles from Iran directly at Israel? I wouldn't rule it out...but Israel looks even worse if they strike Iran before Iran directly strikes at Israel. Furthermore, while Iran can move its best weapons into Lebanon, why not fight Israel through Hezbollah? This way, there's no risk to Iranian lives.
