It's important that you see your dentist immediately. He will give you a prescription for an antibiotic and help you determine whether or not the tooth should be extracted or have a root canal.

The abscess may need to be drained, but for now, use very warm salt water and swish it around in your mouth for a couple of minutes. (1 Tbsp of salt to 8 oz.of very warm water).

An abscessed tooth is not anything to sneeze at, the abscess can spread to other parts of the body and cause life-threatening problems.

Whenever one of our horse's got an abscess in her hoof, we soaked the hoof twice a day in warm water, for about 15 minutes in a bucket with epsom salts. This allowed the infection to drain out. It's a slow process, but it works. Also, don't let the abscess close over, it will trap the infection in. It's best if you keep the horse in a dry area, such as a clean stall or paddock, and let it drain. Keep the hooves clean, too.

I've found that filling a cup with warm salt water and swishing some in my mouth for about 60 seconds generally clears it up after a day or so of the routine. You can otherwise visit a dentist and have them do what amounts to poking it open with a safety pin.

With swelling that large, you really need to go to a dentist tomorrow. Is the tooth an upper or lower tooth? If it is a lower tooth, the swelling can become life threatening.

Do not take any antibiotics. You need to be properly diagnosed first. Also, you should not try to "pop" anything and do not apply heat. Your best bet is to also take Tylenol, which won't interfere with platelets if you have the tooth removed.

If the swelling seems to be progressing under your lower jaw or your tongue feels "funny", go to the Emergency Room at once. Otherwise, make sure you see a dentist first thing tomorrow. Be sure to tell them the extent of your swelling and what your temperature is (yes, go ahead and take it).

This type of swelling is nothing to let go!!!!

Hope this helps!

anbesol !!! It works great to numb the gums around the tooth that is infected.cold packs are good they help the gums from swelling up so much and a pain killer I use bc powders when I get a pain and need it stopped fast. I would also rinse with warm salt water it "cleans" the mouth !!

Hi, Yvonne,,, well, here is my answer to you... take the antibiotics,, until they are finished,, that is to keep the infection away,,, thats why the jaw is pooched out.....try a hot and cold towel on the jaw,, it may help,,,
When you can, go to the dentist and either get a root canal done or pull the tooth.....no kidding. one or the other,, it is never going to be the same anymore.......

good luck

Go to a dentist before you end up in the emergency room or worse.

You will need to wait until the infection has subsided and then you will need to have your tooth treated (root canal or extraction) otherwise the infection will just return.
