I have a 6 year old Chocolate Labrador Retriever. One morning we woke up to find her limping really badly! We took her to the vet, and they said it appeared to be arthritis. Wellll, we put her on 2 kinds of medicine, and it seems to be getting worse. It's only on one leg,,,she drags it around limping. Well last week, we noticed it was so bad, she couldn't even move. I called the vet, explained the situation-and she said to bring her in for x-rays. So I did, and she again said, it's arthritis. My dog is literally miserable. I, in my heart-do not think it is arthritis,,,but I'm not a vet. All she does is lay around,,,and whines and trembles from the pain. Literally! And when she does get up...it takes forever...and sometimes she can't walk so she uses her front legs to scoot and pull her bottom on the ground. It's breaking my heart to watch this and I need help soon! We have already spent close to $600.00 in the past week. Please, someone help!

I work with animals & I think there could be a couple of things that your Lab could be suffering from. However, 6 is pretty young for a lab to have that severe of arthritis. I would definately take her to a different vet to be checked out. Xrays may rule out hip-dysplasia, but not a bad sprain. Good luck!

I would recommend finding another vet. Arthritis pain usually builds up over time. Extreme, acute pain like this may be a sign of something else. Like someone else mentioned x-rays can rule out hip dysplasia but not neurological or soft tissue damage. You may want to take her to a specialist like a neurologist. I took my dog to one. The initial visit was $200 but that included blood work and some medication. It is definitely worth a try. 6 years is really young to have such problems.

It most likely is arthritis or it can be a torn ligament in her knee which is called an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). This can cause a lot of pain especially if she has arthritis. Sometimes a regular vet won't see it so they might send you so to an Orthopedic Veterinary Specialist. If this is the case she will need surgery to get this fixed. I would go back to your vet or call him and ask him about it or bring her to another vet for a second opinion.

I am very sorry for what you are going through... It is so hard to watch them be in pain. If this were me, I would get a second opinion from another vet. It never hurts to have another set of eyes on the problem. Sometimes they catch something that the first vet didn't. Or they may have another treatment that will work better for her.

Best of luck to you and your dog!

I would take my dog to another vet. When my dog had this same type of situation (both back legs) after the vet ran all kinds of test and xrays she recommended me to a specialist. It turned out to be torn ligaments in both knees. He's getting surgery once he's old enough.

Really sorry about your dog. Try taking her to a different vet because they could find something your vet didn't. But if she really is hurting bad then I would put her to sleep. I know that's tough but she really is suffering and it would not be fair to her.

We started feeding our dog of 12 years of age dog food with Glucosomine and Condroiton and, also, bought HA,Hyaluronic Acid in encapsulated form, one each morning, and the canned food each nite, and in three days she was running! She had been dragging her rear legs behind her!

We got back our beautiful Shi Tsu!
